Dr. McWhirter is a Staff Medical Oncologist at the Juravinski Cancer Centre (JCC) in Hamilton, and an Associate Professor at McMaster University. She received her BSc, MSc (Microbiology) and Medical degrees from the University of Toronto. Training in Medical Oncology continued in Toronto; she completed a fellowship in Investigational New Drugs at Princess Margaret Hospital. Her interests include New Drug Development in Melanoma and Gastrointestinal Cancers, and melanoma prevention. Professional Memberships include the Melanoma Executive Committee of the National Cancer Institute, and the Melanoma Disease Site Group of the Cancer Care Ontario Program in Evidence-Based Care. She is the local PI on a number of international clinical trials in melanoma and GI malignancies.
General Surgery and Surgical Oncology
Dr. Valerie Francescutti is a Surgical Oncologist at the Hamilton General Hospital and Juravinski Cancer Center, and member of the Division of General Surgery at McMaster University. She graduated with an Honours BSc from the University of Toronto, and from McMaster University Medical School. She trained in the General Surgery residency program, followed by a clinical fellowship in Complex General Surgical Oncology at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in Buffalo, NY. Concurrent with her fellowship, she completed a Master’s in Health Research Methodology at McMaster University, defending her thesis focused on knowledge translation in novel surgical procedures such as cytoreduction/hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). Dr. Francescutti then worked as an Assistant Professor of Oncology and Surgery at Roswell Park and the University at Buffalo from 2012-2018. She was assistant program director for the Surgical Oncology fellowship from 2014-2016, and program director from 2016-2018. Her clinical focus at Roswell Park included melanoma, other cutaneous malignancies, soft tissue sarcoma, lower GI malignancies, appendiceal neoplasms and malignancies, and cytoreduction/HIPEC. In early 2018, Dr. Francescutti transitioned to her current role as Associate Professor of Surgery at McMaster University, with a similar clinical focus. Her research interests include outcomes in oncologic surgery, surgical pathway development, the use of survey methodology and qualitative research methodology to evaluate and improve the patient experience, and the use of knowledge translation methods for surgical oncology program development.
